The Laboratory
The laboratory was created in 2019. It is the result of the merger of two prestigious entities: the Matière Molle et Chimie laboratory, headed by Ludwik Leibler since its creation in 2001, and the Organic Chemistry laboratory headed by Janine Cossy. The ambition is to tackle synthetic chemistry at all scales, from the molecule to the material. The laboratory has 18 permanent staff (CNRS, ESPCI Paris, Mines-ParisTech) and around thirty PhD and post-doctoral students with a wide range of scientific backgrounds and cultures.
The unit’s researchers advocate a global, multidisciplinary approach combining synthetic chemistry, self-assembly, the study and modeling of mechanical, rheological, electrical or optical properties of reactive systems and materials in relation to their structure, and their exploitation in applications. Our research is supported by close industrial partnerships and numerous academic collaborations as part of international and national consortia.
This original approach, which combines fundamental science with practical applications, has led to new concepts - vitrimers, "soft particle glasses" - new reactions, innovative materials for a circular plastics economy, robotics, cosmetics, or surgical practice, as well as instrumental developments and original processes.
