Overview of the unit’s activities
----

The C3M unit develops and exploits synthetic chemistry at all scales, from molecule to material. The unit is organized into three complementary teams, creating a continuum of well-identified and recognized expertise in molecular and macromolecular synthesis, and in the physicochemistry of soft matter.

The research topics developed in the unit and the methodologies implemented reflect the broad spectrum of skills and expertise of its members. Nevertheless, they can be grouped according to generic themes, revealing thematic coherence and the possibility of synergies.
Exploring molecular diversity: tense cycles, development of exchangeable reactions
Sustainable chemistry: catalysis with naturally abundant metals, enzymatic catalysis, photocatalysis, continuous flow chemistry, solvent-free syntheses, reactive extrusion.
 Materials using dynamic covalent chemistry
Architectural systems for medicine, robotics and polymer materials
Formulation of functional colloidal gels and glasses.

Some of the unit’s work thrives on the continuity of the historic successes for which it is renowned: dynamic covalent chemistry, reactive extrusion, functional polymers. Thanks in particular to the contribution of young researchers recruited since 2019, several issues related to sustainable chemistry and processes have emerged and are developing rapidly: flow chemistry, new catalyses, architected materials.

The unit’s researchers advocate a global, multidisciplinary approach that combines synthetic chemistry, self-assembly, the study and modeling of the mechanical, rheological, electrical or optical properties of reactive systems and materials in relation to their structure, and their exploitation in applications. This research benefits from close industrial partnerships and numerous academic collaborations as part of international and national consortia.

This original approach, which combines fundamental science and practical applications, has led to new concepts - vitrimers, "soft particle glasses" - new reactions, innovative materials for a circular plastics economy, robotics, cosmetics or surgical practice, as well as original instrumental developments and processes.
